You’re about to embark on mentoring a fifth grade student in the reading of literature.  New York State has very particular standards for each grade.

Please review this link, where you will see what teachers at that grade level are expected to teach students.

When you are done, please write a reflection on those standards.  Does anything surprise you?  Do you think the standards are realistic?  How difficult do you think it would be for students of this age to become proficient at these skills?  I’m interested in your thoughts.
