This is your place to begin your research project.
This is a multiple step process, as we have already discussed. Please make sure you follow the steps. Do every one. Do them in order. This will avoid almost all problems that might arise in the process.
STEP ONE
Take out your phone (yes, I know…).
Send a text to 81010.
In the text, send ONLY this:
@2749k
You have now joined Remind. You will receive text alerts on occasion, notifying you of due dates and updates for this class.
You’re welcome.
STEP TWO
Sign in to whatever your professional student email address is.
Let’s revisit this concept:
A PROFESSIONAL STUDENT EMAIL does not look like
bigpoppa4u@gmail.com OR twinkie157@yahoo.com
It looks more like
ThomasM25@aol.com OR Jessie_Marks@msn.com
It is something you can use to apply to colleges, post for jobs or write business emails from. If yours looks like something you would use for Twitter, Tumbler or Instagram, rethink it and create a new one.
Also, if your email is appropriate, please go through and clear out the trash as well as the inbox. If you have 3K emails, you have a problem. Sort them by sender, delete them in groups and then unsubscribe to notifications and marketing emails. Trust me, it will make life easier.
Once you’re compliant in these ways, make sure your email is associated with a Google Account that you can get into.
Then
so we can use the email address for class.
STEP THREE
Sign into your google account.
Go to the link for the Notes Sheet.
When it opens, right click and SAVE to your Google Docs. Change the name of your copy to YOURNAME Notes Sheet.
STEP FOUR
Watch these videos. Yes, all of them. (You may even need to watch them again as you work through the process.) Take notes – you’ll need them.

How to Know if a Source is Reliable
STEP FIVE
You will spend the first twenty minutes of the period browsing the ‘Net for information about your topic, reading web pages, watching videos, etc. about the subject. This is a relaxed search. You are simply trying to center your attention on your topic so that you can brainstorm and narrow your focus later. Jot down some bullet points as you read – you’ll really need them later.
The possible GENERAL topics are:
child abuse domestic abuse sexual abuse self-esteem
racism sexism imperialism (Nettie’s experiences)
poverty
You must pick ONE to start. There is a chance that your ultimate research will have more than one of these built into it, but you have to start somewhere.
Next, narrow this major topic down to sub-categories. So for example, if you selected domestic violence at a general topic you can break that down into sub topics of: psychological reasons why batterers batter; what does the process of battering look like; battering in particular economic, cultural or social situations.
Begin to search Google for that sub-topic. Make sure that you can easily find enough information to use for this assignment. If you can’t, or if there’s too much information (that is, if you discover your topic is still too broad), you must reevaluate and find another.
By the end of the period, you MUST have chosen a topic AND a slant: what angle are you pursuing?
Enter the information here.
STEP SIX
You have begun your notes page. When you can, please share the page with us at this link.
You can find the link to your notes page by going to the top right corner of your notes page, hitting SHARE, then changing the setting to ANYONE WITH LINK CAN COMMENT.
Copy the link, and paste it into the form.
STEP SEVEN
Begin your outline, now that you have “completed” your Notes Sheet.
The outline should rely somewhat on the assignment, but also on how your thesis can be supported by additional information.
Here is the outline template.
Check out Sample Outline.
Please share the link to your outline.
Here is your Commentary Organizer
STEP EIGHT
Enter the link to your Research Paper
STEP NINE
Congratulations! Your journey into research is complete.
Please fill out this survey to the best of your ability. Depending on the fullness and quality of your responses, you could earn up to 25 extra credit points!
